Definition of volunteer
A volunteer is a person who chooses to devote some of their time and skills to helping other people, communities or organizations without receiving financial compensation for their work. Volunteering is based on personal initiative and is motivated by the desire to contribute to the common good, support a noble cause or help people in need.
Volunteers can work individually or within non-profit organizations, NGOs, charities, community groups, cultural or sporting events, humanitarian aid programs and many other contexts. Activities carried out by volunteers can range from simple acts of kindness to long-term structured projects and can include various fields such as education, health, environmental protection, social work, arts and culture.
Through its altruistic nature, volunteering benefits both the communities served and the volunteers themselves, providing the latter with opportunities for personal, professional development and the improvement of social skills.
